EMDR/Trauma Therapy

The mind and body can often heal itself naturally. Much of this natural process occurs during sleep, particularly during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. In 1987 Francine Shapiro developed Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) utilising this natural process to successfully treat Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Now EMDR is being used to effectively treat a wide range of mental health problems including, and not limited to, anxiety and panic attacks, depression, stress, phobia’s, sleep problems and complicated grief.

When something out of the ordinary happens in your life you can become traumatized by that event, your body and mind can feel and become overloaded. That overload can result in the disturbing experiences remaining frozen in the brain which means they are stored in an emotional state.

“When my eldest child was born I was so affected by the trauma around his birth that I was unable to leave the house and the world felt far too big and unsafe for me. I tried counselling but talking wasn’t enough and I was left with flashbacks and fear. I heard about EMDR and hoped that it would help me. I had a course of treatment and by the end I felt like me again. I went back to work and felt safe. It was life changing and I’ll be forever grateful” – Anon .

This part of the brain called the limbic system maintains the traumatic memory in an isolated memory network that is connected to emotions and physical sensations. These memories can be continually triggered when you experience events like them. Sometimes the memory itself can be forgotten but the feelings associated can still be triggered. EMDR helps to reconnect the brains memory enabling your brain to process the traumatic experience in a more natural way.

Eye movement or bilateral stimulation ( left and right movements) similar to REM sleep are used to desensitise the painful feelings and then become a neutral memory of an experience in the past.

Deep Relaxation

We offer Hypnotherapy for deep relaxation and support with sleep difficulties, please read on for more information…

Hypnotherapy for Relaxation and Wellbeing

Hypnotherapy is a gentle therapeutic approach that uses focused attention and guided relaxation to help you access a calmer, more receptive state of mind. Contrary to popular myths, you remain aware and in control throughout the process.

Many people describe hypnosis as feeling similar to becoming absorbed in a book, daydreaming, or that comfortable space between being awake and asleep. In this relaxed state, it can become easier to step away from the constant mental chatter of everyday life and allow both mind and body an opportunity to rest.

I offer hypnotherapy to support; Deep relaxation and stress reduction, Sleep difficulties, Menopause-related sleep disruption, Managing overwhelm and nervous system dysregulation, Improving overall wellbeing and self-care

Sessions are tailored to your individual needs and can be used as a stand alone approach or alongside therapy where appropriate.
